To ensure a high level of performance and consistency across the ensemble, all auditioning members must complete a structured video submission. Each component is designed to evaluate both musical ability and overall performance readiness.
Must bring your own instrument to audition
1. Required Excerpt (Provided)
Applicants will perform an official excerpt provided by FMMB. This selection reflects the style and expectations of the ensemble and allows evaluators to assess how well candidates interpret and execute specific musical material.
2. Technical Exercise
This portion focuses on fundamental skills such as scales, rudiments, articulation patterns, or range exercises. It is designed to evaluate technical control, consistency, and overall command of the instrument.
3. Short Stylistic Etude (Groove-Based)
Candidates will perform a short piece that highlights groove, feel, and stylistic interpretation. This is especially important for demonstrating comfort within styles connected to “The Florida Sound,” including rhythmic accuracy, phrasing, and musical expression.
4. Optional Solo (30–60 seconds)
Applicants may include a short solo to showcase their individuality, creativity, and advanced ability. While optional, this is an opportunity to stand out and demonstrate a higher level of musicianship.
Tone & Clarity
Evaluators listen for a strong, consistent sound quality that is clear and controlled. This includes proper tone production, intonation, and the ability to maintain sound integrity across different ranges and dynamics.
Time Feel & Style
This measures how well a performer stays in tempo and locks into the groove. Strong candidates demonstrate accurate rhythm, steady timing, and the ability to interpret different musical styles with authenticity and confidence.
Visual Carriage (Winds)
For wind players, posture, horn angle, and overall physical presentation are important. This includes maintaining proper playing position, confidence in movement, and a professional appearance while performing.
Musical Adaptability
FMMB values versatility. Candidates are evaluated on their ability to adjust to different musical styles, dynamics, and interpretations. This reflects how well they can perform within a diverse and collaborative ensemble setting.
Professionalism
This includes overall presentation of the audition video—punctual submission, appropriate attire, preparation, and attention to detail. It also reflects attitude, effort, and the level of seriousness the candidate brings to the opportunity.
